How hot engines keep their cool

"There's a new oil temperature control system soon to hit the market called UltraCool that actually controls oil temperature. It has three components: a regulator that allows oil to circulate through the cooler only when it reaches a temperature above 160 degrees (needed for warm-up to allow the oil in the engine to lubricate properly); a thermostatically controlled, high-output fan that pulls air through the oil cooler when the oil temperature goes above 210 degrees and automatically shuts off when it drops to 190 degrees (and works even when you're standing still); and a cover that keeps out debris."

We at Brooks Performance have been dealing with the application of thermal barrier coatings for over 18 years now. The application of these coatings in the effort to control Heat with Thermal barriers, friction reducers, and thermal dispersants has been applied to pistons, exhaust systems, combustion chambers, valves, ports, etc etc. We have built some of the biggest badest bikes on the market, always on the edge and using American made products and still I have always been concerned with oil temp. We tried every cooler, oil filter cover on the market.

The need for thermal control has increased over the years for obvious reasons, bigger motors, increased compression, head work etc. etc.

And we that love these American made machines look down at that oil temperature gauge and think about what that is doing to the life of my motor. H-D's answere ( the company of denial ) to this is to turn off the rear cylinder, shut the motor down at 250 deg., provide little plastic crotch shields, a new vest you can dip in water, and a $75. plastic water bottle. Got to love that, imagine your bike in traffic stopping when it hits 250 deg. just grab your water bottle. All I can say to this is thank God for synthetic oils.

Then the best product to hit the market since synthetic oils came out. ULTRA COOL (ultracoolfl.com) This idea of Marlon Moss's is to keep the oil temp within the correct range 190 to 220 deg. The patent design is so simple and straight forward that this will sell itself. The design is even good looking, a lot better than most of those front spoilers we have all seen, they are paintable or leave them black, they actually hide a clutered area on the fl's. There are many applications now and more coming out.

I won't go into the function of this product, we that ride all know the issues, just talk to Robert at ultracoolfl.com I have found their customer service to be very good, I don't know the lead time now butI would bet they are going to be busy.

Best Regards

"The UltraCool is great. I recently took a ride from Hollister, California, to Utah via Las Vegas and went from 112 degree weather to 42 degree weather, and it worked, it maintained the oil temperature exactly like it was supposed to. The hottest the oil temperature ever got to was 217 degrees and that was in Las Vegas, when it was 107 outside. I also like it because it's very inconspicuous and it doesn't stand out like I added something to the bike."

–Bill Rodgers, owner of a Harley-Davidson 2003 Road King.

"I have installed the Ultracool unit to my Ultra Classic and found that it works great. Temp checks show that the fan comes on at 225-230 degrees and shuts off at 197 degress. The fan is so quite that it can not be heard. This unit is far better that a straight air cool unit, it allow the engine to get to and maintain proper engine oil temperature."

–Norm Tillman, Gillette, WY, owner of a 2007 Ultra Classic.

"Working great! have made a lot of people rethink their cooler setups. On the average Im running about 16 to 20 degrees cooler than the guys I ride with that have traditional coolers. I'm just crazy about the cooler setup and show it off whe ever I'm asked about it. I have never had temp reach more than 232 degrees. Thank you!"

"Recently I purchased an Ultra Cool from Hamilton Motosports Kingston for my 2003 FLHTCU, I was going on a trip to the USA. I was in Key West, it was 95 degrees out, we were stuck in traffic. My buddie beside me on a FLHX was over heating, but not me, my ultra cool came on and my bike quickly cooled down and maintained oil pressure and temp. I was very impressed and quite happy to not have the worry about overheating. My friend is now getting an ultra cool! "

"I bought the Ultra Cool to protect my investment in my Ultra Classic. I was worried about overheating and was looking for a product that really worked. The Harley oil cooler I had installed at the dealer was ok, but the only that time that cooler is working is when you are riding down the road and does no cooling in stop and go traffic or sitting at stop lights.

Then I found the Ultra Cool, it not only works when you are riding but keeps your engine cool when your stuck in traffic or at stop lights. With out it my legs really burned up. After I installed the Ultra Cool on my Harley I really noticed the difference, in stop and go traffic and stop lights, I know when it kicks on because I can feel my legs cooling down.

I did some temp checks, With the front Jug reading around 250 and the Thermal Switch block reading around 180 to 190 the fan would kick on, the temp on the front Jug would then range between 230 and 250, and that's with the bike running in the garage with no fans blowing on the engine.

I RECOMMEND this product to anyone who rides an air cooled bike who is concerned about keeping their engine in top shape. Now I do not have to worry. And Robert is fantastic."

–Tim Pickering, 2008 FLHTCU
